Nick Miller.

current job:
Lead guitarist for LONGREEF.

Sydney, Australia.

Current album or project:
Dirty Motel (LONGREEF’s 2nd release).

Former bands:
Simoriah, The Good Ol Boys, and One Direction (they fired me for screwing up the choreography.)

Guitar influences growing up:
Slash, Gary Moore, Nuno Bettencourt, Steve Morse and Zakk Wylde.

The guitars I use are:
My Dean USA Thoroughbred, Dean USA Cadillac and Dean USA Hardtail.

The strings and tunings I use are:
DR DDT 11-54’s ½ step down standard tuning, drop D and DGDGAD.

My current rig setup consists of:
Amps – Dr Z Carmen Ghia, and a killer early 1980s single channel JCM 800 which I drilled holes in and added a second channel to because I’m an idiot. Plus a bunch of boutique pedals which are an ancient Chinese secret.

The greatest invention for guitars:

My normal songwriting process consists of:
Sometimes I’ll stumble across a lyric idea or vocal hook, then write music to it. Other times I’ll just jam for hours, record it and send it all to our singer Josh. “Hey man, sift through all this.”

My favorite guitar solo from our band:
"Want Me Back."

My favorite all-time guitar solo (from another guitarist):
“Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming” – Deep Purple/Steve Morse

Favorite all-time song (any artist):
"Little Wing" – Jimi Hendrix

Favorite song by our band:
“She Likes The Ladies.”

Favorite song to perform in front of a live audience:
“She Likes The Ladies.”

My Career highlight thus far:
Playing in front of 10,000 people on Virginia Beach for the Verizon Music Fest.

My most embarrassing moment on stage:
Going to take the mother of all leaps onto the drum riser and tripping on the edge of it………the rest of the band nearly stopped playing they were laughing so much and the people in the crowd were pissing themselves laughing. I still managed to keep playing while I was faceplanted, and somehow got to my feet without missing too much of the song.

Other than my guitar and amps, the one piece of my gear that I cannot live without is:
My iPhone! iRig, Voice recorder, tuner and metronome all in this little black module.

The first song I ever mastered on guitar:
"Let It Be" – The Beatles

My first guitar was:
An Ibanez Roadstar Strat Copy – it was awesome!

The first time I ever heard our band on the radio was:
On our bus, driving from Vegas to Biloxi, MS in October last year (2012). “Dirty Motel” came on the station we were listening to……..I recorded that riff on a lazy afternoon over a year ago, I never imagined I’d hear it on the radio.

If I am only sure of one thing in life, It's:
Marijuana should be legalized.

The one ritual I always perform prior to going on stage is:
We have this warm up exercise where we try to push each other over. It sounds weird, but actors use it before they go on set to maximize their focus. I’m pretty good, but it’s hard to push over Jim, our bass player.

The exact moment I knew I would pursue a career in music was:
When I saw Angus Young in the video for “Thunderstruck”.

The one thing most fans don't know about me:
I always secretly wanted to be an Astronaut.

The best advice I could give beginning guitarists:
Find a GOOD teacher, someone who you connect with, jam with other players as much as you can, and learn directly from recordings. Even if it takes you months to learn the parts to one song, you’ll be improving so much more than if you are only playing off tabs or youtube.

Band(s) I'm listening to right now:
Pinnick Gales Pridgen – it’s unbelievable. And Stone Sour “House of Gold and Bones part 1”.

My 3 all-time favorite albums:
Guns n Roses - “Appetite For Destruction”, Jimi Hendrix - “Are You Experienced” & Gary Moore “Blues Alive.”

Best gig:
Homebake 2000 – festival in Sydney with all Australian bands, absolutely epic.

Favorite junk food:
Philly cheese steak sandwich from Arby’s.

My biggest pet peeve:
Guitarists bitching about who the best guitarist is.

The word or catch phrase I say too much is:
“Right on.”

The hardest part of my job:
Getting a decent amount of sleep.

What I like to do in my "off" time:
Surf, hit the gym, do yoga, drink beer, go to barbecues.

The first thing I do when I come home from touring is:
Catch up with my friends for beers.

Previous or first day job:
Orange slicing boy at a restaurant. A restaurant that sold lots of orange juice.

Right after this interview I'm going to:
Go and annoy our drummer, Tristan.

I couldn't imagine being on the road without:
The other guys in my band! And DVDs.

If I wasn't doing the musician thing, I could really see myself working as:
An astronaut

Favorite movie:
Inception - (Leo Decaprio)

My mission in life:
To live every day like the world was going to blow up tomorrow.

My guilty pleasure band or artist:
Taylor Swift. She is SO hot!

My next goal is:
To release an instrumental album. l the tracking’s done, just need to get into the studio to mix and arrange.

The greatest contribution guitars/music have brought into my life is:
Connection to other people, humility and the ability to persevere.

The one musician I would love to work with that I have not yet had the chance would be:

If I could have three wishes, they would be:

  • A magic guitar room with every guitar I could wish for, and there would be so many I’d never get around to playing them all
  • A travelling wave pool that I could cart around by trailer behind the bus. Then I could surf everyday.
  • A voice like James Earl Jones.

When it's all said and done, I want the world to remember me for:
For marrying Mila Kunis, and for being the guy who never gave up on his dreams.
